Shark's Bay Peaceful & Pristine
Tranquil Waters, Luxury Resorts
Let's address the name first, because it puts people off and it really shouldn't. There are no sharks prowling the shallows of Shark's Bay waiting for swimmers. The name comes from the shape of the coastline — or depending on which old-timer you ask, from the harmless leopard sharks that used to be spotted here decades ago. What you'll actually find is some of the calmest, clearest water in Sharm.
Tucked between the airport and Naama Bay along the coastal road, Shark's Bay occupies a gentle curve of shoreline that stays shallow for a surprisingly long distance. The water here barely ripples. For families with small children, nervous swimmers, or anyone who just wants to float in warm, waist-deep water while colorful fish dart around their ankles — this is the spot.
What Makes Shark's Bay Different
Sharm's main beaches tend to get crowded. Naama Bay hums with activity from sunrise to well past midnight. Ras Um Sid draws the snorkeling crowd. Shark's Bay, by contrast, feels almost like a private retreat. The resorts here — and they're predominantly high-end — face directly onto the bay, meaning the beach is never overrun with day-trippers. The atmosphere is quieter, slower, more deliberate.
The bay's geography does something clever. A natural headland shelters it from the stronger currents that sweep past other parts of the coast, creating a natural swimming pool effect. The water stays shallow — often no deeper than chest height — for a good thirty to forty meters out. This makes it uniquely suited to families with young children, or anyone who prefers their swimming without waves or surprises.
But don't mistake calm for boring. Several of the resorts have house reefs directly accessible from their beachfront. Walk into the water with a mask and within minutes you're floating above gardens of coral. Parrotfish crunch away at the reef. Butterflyfish flit past in pairs. If you're lucky, an eagle ray might glide along the sandy bottom. You don't need a boat. You don't need a guide. The reef comes to you.
"Shark's Bay is where you go when you want the Red Sea to yourself. No crowds, no noise — just warm water, coral, and quiet."
The Resorts of Shark's Bay
This stretch of coast is home to some of Sharm's most established luxury properties. Unlike the sprawling all-inclusive compounds further north in Nabq, the resorts here tend to be slightly smaller, more boutique in feel, and built to take full advantage of the bay's natural beauty.
Most offer the full range of Red Sea amenities: private beach access, on-site dive centers, multiple restaurants, and pools that overlook the water. The difference is the sense of space. Because the bay limits how many properties can line the shore, it never feels overdeveloped. Even at full occupancy, you'll find a quiet spot on the sand.
The dive centers here are well-established, and Shark's Bay is an excellent base for divers. It's slightly closer to Ras Mohammed and the Straits of Tiran than Naama Bay, which means shorter boat rides to the best sites. Several centers run daily trips to both locations, and the house reefs provide a perfect training ground for beginners.
Visiting If You're Not Staying Here
Most of the beachfront in Shark's Bay belongs to hotels, but non-guests can still access it. Several resorts offer day passes — usually including a sunbed, towel, and sometimes a meal or drink credit. Prices vary by season and property, but it's a worthwhile splurge if you're staying somewhere without a beach and want a quieter day by the sea.
There's also a small public access point between the resort properties where locals and visitors can reach the water without going through a hotel. It's not well-signposted — ask a taxi driver who knows the area — but it exists. Bring your own towel, water, and snacks, because facilities are limited at the public section.
Mornings are magical at Shark's Bay. The water is at its calmest, the light is perfect for photos, and you'll often have the reef almost entirely to yourself. Afternoons can get hot — but that's what the resort pools and air-conditioned lounges are for.
